Life is starting to warm up here in the South, and by warm I mean it’s been 70 degrees (Fahrenheit) all week! Winters are a real struggle for me, so it’s a relief to see spring season kicking in early. When the weather begins to warm up, my taste buds simultaneously begin craving fresh, cool foods – and therefore my usual hot breakfast of oatmeal is the last thing I want in the morning.
However, oatmeal seems to be the only breakfast food that fills me up and I always find myself in a rut with my morning routine this time of year. The idea finally struck me the other day to make an oatmeal smoothie bowl. It’s not too “out there” for others to try (right?) and it’s substantial enough to keep me chasing an active toddler all morning. Turns out it’s the perfect answer to my cool food cravings, my rapid digestion system, and my need for something quick and easy!
So with that, I created this 5-ingredient blueberry-oat smoothie bowl as a new routine breakfast for the spring and summer seasons.
If you’ve never had a smoothie bowl, it’s basically a smoothie in a bowl – mind blowing, I know! What I like most about smoothie bowls is they are topped with extra goodies like fruits, nuts, seeds, coconut flakes, granola, etc. It gives the smoothie added texture and crunch. Plus, it’s an easy way to get more nutrient-dense foods into the diet.
To prepare this 5-ingredient blueberry-oat smoothie bowl, simply add instant oats, soy milk, frozen blueberries, banana, and walnuts to a blender and blend until smooth. The blender I use is the Ninja Professional Blender – this blender is very powerful, is easy to clean, and can be used to blend or pulse just about anything. Once all the ingredients are blended, add to a bowl and top with whatever you like. In the pictures, I topped mine with chia seeds, toasted coconut flakes, fresh strawberries, and pepitas.
And there you have it friends: a delicious breakfast smoothie bowl that takes only 5 ingredients to make, 5 minutes to prepare, and is substantial enough to get you through the morning!

- ½ cup instant (or quick-cooking) oats
- ¾ cup soy milk
- ¼ cup frozen blueberries
- ½ banana (medium to large size)
- 1 tablespoon walnuts
- Top with:
- Fresh berries
- Coconut flakes
- Chia seeds
- In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend on high until a smooth consistency is reached. Pour into a bowl and top with fresh berries, nuts, coconut flakes, and/or chia seeds.
